Open Question: I need help deciding on a college Degree?

Neither my boyfriend or I have credit cards. We're both still in college, years from now, we'll eventually need to buy a house.

I've always heard that you HAVE to get a credit card to build credit. Is this seriously the only option? I just don't want one. I'll eventually get one for emergencies, but for now, I don't need or want one. And I think that it's insane that society is making people who are barely adults get credit cards to "build credit." It's a vicious cycle I'm choosing to stay out of, but of course one day I'll have to join it to buy a house.

Is my not having a credit card now going to bite me in the ass by the time I'm going to be buying a house, 5-7 years from now? By then I'll have started paying back my student loans, which I know builds credit.

Open Question: I need help deciding on a college Degree?

I've already been to college once and withdrew from my program after I decided I did not enjoy it. I now have about 80 credit hours I can transfer into another program but because I am 30k in debt to student loans I do not want to rush into another degree I wouldn't not enjoy. Honestly, not to sound conceited, I do not think there is any program beyond my ability to complete. I took education very seriously in grade school and I am also very artistically inclined. So, here is what Interests me but I can not think of any type of career it would apply to.

The bottom line is that I would love to do any type of humanitarian work that will help future generation. Urban/park development... social responsibility... something along those moral lines.
I enjoy: welding, painting, working with animals of all types (land and sea), architecture, history, english, writing, TRAVELING, expeditions, designing space layouts, landscaping, building and organizing projects.

anything is a huge help!
In case you are wondering: my degree was a Digital media production major. In encompassed film, recording arts, webdesign, lighting, and sound.

Open Question: off campus?

I am 19 years old in college. I recently filed my taxes with H and R block. I claimed myself, but when my parents found out about this they were furious. They were concerned that now the FAFSA will be messed up and I will not be able to get the best deal in the long run. I was informed from H and R block that by me claiming myself I would receive more money since I have my own student loans and make 10K a year. My parents were also concerned about health insurance and they were concerned about owing the IRS money since they claimed me on their W-2's all year. I know i can still file a 1040X to make the change and allow my parents to claim me. I just want to know what the best way of going about this is.

Open Question: How did you pay for college?

I got accepted to school, but the thought of paying is really overwhelming me, I'm considering student loans, can anyone tell me about their experience with student loans and how much they borrowed.

Open Question: Army Should I join or should I wait?

Im seriously thinking about joining the US army and was wondering the best action to choose. Im still in school as a Junior and i dont have a silver spoon in my mouth so college would be from loans. Average student most of the time. Im thinking about becoming an MP in the army and law enforcement after or when i go to college. My question is should I join the reserve untill im out of school and than go active or should I wait to join altogeather untill after i graduate.

A student take out two loans totaling $4000 to help pay for college expences. One loan is at 5% intrest and the other is at 7%. Intrest for both loans is compounded annually. If the first-year interst is $234, find the amount or each loan.

Resolved Question: My brother is looking into filing bankruptcy, is that bad?

This is a long story but...
My fiance and I have been waiting on a apartment to come open in my neighbor for about a year now. They are nice and decent on the price. However, I have decided to go back to college and I was planning on paying for my college while I was in school that way I wouldn't have a student loan to pay off. We have been on a waiting list so the guy that owns the apartments called me and told me they have a opening. We have to make a decision today because these apartments get gone quick. So I guess my question is... should we continue living at home with our parents until I atleast get my associates degree (and pay for my college while I'm still in school) or should we go ahead and move out and just get a student loan? We can't afford to pay both the bills and my school. And when we move out we'll only have $50 a week for "fun" money.

Resolved Question: My brother is looking into filing bankruptcy, is that bad?

My brother has over 97,000 dollars in personal student loans, plus 60,000 in credit card debt, all accrued during college. All his debt was due to him paying for studnt supplies, tuition ect. He now has a good paying job, however his salary does not come close to covering his loans and credit card payments. He has mentioned filing bankruptcy as he can't pay rent, utilities ect and tjhe other payments. I told him to contact a credit counseling group, and when he did they told him to get a second job, which his work schedule will not allow for. I don't want to see him make a mistake, any tips?
I feel bad for him, he is a good kid. He got great grades, but his HS college couselor did not assist very much in helping kids with their options, she really pushed all the kids to join the army or something to that effect. He worked his butt off in college and now has a great job with the leading company in his field. There is NO time for him to take another job, he works 7 days a week right now, and often has to travel for work. If bankruptcy is his only option, fine, I just don't want him to get pushed in the wrong direction, and me being the big sis....he always hits me for advice! THANKS!!
He does not live a big spending lifestyle. He lives with me. I feed him, help him with money when he is really short, ect. He tries to give me money when he can, however his paychecks are literally GONE with student loans/credit payments. I would not help him if he were living it up and not reponsible. However, this kid is really struggling and I don't know how else to help him.

Open Question: How can I get an independent loan for college?

I'm 23 and just shy of 5 months until I have indepenent student status. I'm halway through my program--I have 3 more quarters and I'm out of money. Up until now I've been paying out of pocket for everything--so I do not have any student loans. Now I'm out of money--and though I could take a break in between 1st and 2nd year to work and save. My living expenses are not cheap and I'm trying to figure out how to finance 2.5-3 months worth of rent before I could get any government money when I should qualify in July.

Being a student, I don't have enough credit to get an independent loan right now without a cosigner. I tried to see if I could get a loan on Sallie Mae a month ago for $30,000 and was denied. My parent that would probably qualify to get me government money right now while I have dependent status will not fill out the required tax information for me to get any money, so I can't fill out the FAFSA until I'm an indpenent student
I need concrete certainty that I will be able to finance those months before any loans kick in. Is there any possible way to get the money I need through a private loan without a cosigner? I do have a credit card now--I did go over my limit and am on payment plan but plan to have it payed off by April--I've been paying above the minimum amount significantly and it is well beyond my credit limit now--so I'm sure this has affected my credit rating--this has been a matter of 4 months--but everything is on time now and before that I had another card with good payment history that I cancelled to apply for this card. I there any kind of loan option where I can get the money I need to finance my last year or should I apply for a smaller incremental loan and then the rest at a later date--I don't want to damage my rating, but if I do not have a gurantee that I can get a loan, I cannot finish school. What other options are out there?
I'm really frustrated--I've gone to the school--and they tell me basically I have to try out the options on my own. Is it possible to get this loan now while I'm still dependent without a cosigner?

Ok so i'm a culinary arts student at a comunity college, and I still live at home, I'm 18, and i drive my parents car and all that and they pay for everything still.
But they're jackasses about it all the time, they keep driving the car that they let me use and use up all the gas, and don't leave me money for gas, and if they think the car is a bit messy they throw my stuff away, inculuding a $150 book, my dad calls me a dyke all the time, and i'm not a even lesbian, and he tells me that women shouldn't be in college and they tell me i'm going to hell because i have a "jewish name" (abigail) It doesn't make sense and they're all insane.
i want to leave, and since i don't have any money i don't think it would work to well for me to just get an apartment, and a car while im in school, cuz with all the bills and insurance, i don't think i would be able to make enough money.
If i transfer to a college with dorms i can get loans, and i can meet people and learn some social skills...
... meet people, learns social skills since i don't really have any, and all that.
I really have no idea how to survive on my own, and i'm terrified to do that, but i don't think my culinary credits will transfer, although i really don't know much about that either.
So I don't know what to do at all, I'm thinking a 4 year college, where i can live on campus would be best, since i can get loans and grants, and financial aide to pay for it, but i don;t really want to be in debt and all that.
I just know that i need to get away from my family.
um the thing with my name was actually started by my grandmother, not my parents...but yeah.

Open Question: Tax Question - Can a 1040EZ filer claim a 1098T?

My daughter wants to file her own taxes. She is a full time college student and made about $4K last year with $270 withheld for federal. She has a 1098T from college. Can she incorporate this into her 1040EZ or should she file with another form?

She has her own student loans (co-signed by my ex wife), etc.. lives in the dorm and stays with me on the week-ends.

Would she make out better if I claimed her? ...if I could legally claim her ???

How does that work?

Help!

Resolved Question: What should I tell my parents?

Ok a little more information than my last question.

I have 73K from an Inheritance. I'm 18- going to college and basically the deal is that I'm short 3K each year, my family is going to get a student loan (All 3 of us got 73K) and after I graduate we are going to pay it off by spliting the 12 thousand dollar loan equally (to also build my credit history!). So I'm not looking into spending the money except to pay my portion of my tuition thats not covered by grants and stuff.
The money means a lot to me so I dont want to risk losing it. I have no idea what any of this investment stuff means or how to make a good share of money off of it.
Help? Suggestions? Advice?

Resolved Question: What should I tell my parents?

I'm in college and I want to get my Phd in anthropology so I can do research and be a college professor. However, my parents hate the idea b/c they want me to be a pharmacist so I can make 6 figures out of college. But I hate science and could care less about chemistry. It's not that I'm not smart enough, I always do well in classes I just don't enjoy the material. What I enjoy is learning about people and their interactions with others. They tell me I'm being selfish b/c I'm not considering what they want for me. They also say $55,000 starting pay is horrible (b/c that is what the school I attend pays starting profs). I just don't know what to say to make them listen. The told me I need to leave school until I come to my senses, b/c they aren't going to waste money on "this crap".

How easy is it to get student loans, so I can pay for school myself?
I did study pre-pharmacy for a year and spent my summer working in a pharmacy and I hated it! But my parents just don't get that.

Resolved Question: So, I'm a Loser with an M.A Degree. How to get family off my back?

My parents had always promised me four years of college, on them. Thats amazing, I know. Well, after my 3rd year, they desided to divorce, and they needed to spend their money on that, so I had to drop out. Turns out that my mom was taking out student loans to pay for my college in my name- without telling me. She was forging my signature. Now that I'm out of school, the loans are coming back, and all of the sudden, its my problem- despite their promises to pay for it. The loans are going to debt collectors, and its ruining my credit. I can't make the payments. Should I be angry that she took out the loans in my name without asking me? I know most kids have to pay for college on their own anyway, but now my credit is ruined, and I feel like she lied to me. Do I have the right to be angry about this, even though most people have to pay their own way, that they told me they would pay for it and then stuck me with the bills?
Mitty- because of the loans already out in my name, I couldn't get any more. I DID have to quit. I had no choice, and no way of paying for it.

Resolved Question: So, I'm a Loser with an M.A Degree. How to get family off my back?

My siblings tease me about how a college degree is useless and a bad investment. At this point...I'm feeling depressed enough to believe it. I have an M.A degree/ solid work experience/great references. However, I've always had a hard time getting decent-paying jobs ( I interview well too). I'm over 30 and make money in the low--mid 20K range ( full time, with no benefits). I like my jobs but can't afford to live. My working life, I've been poor...and my students loans are over $200 a month. My 6 siblings, on the otherhand, have a comfortable lifestyle and all bought houses. 3 of my siblings finished high school and 3 actually dropped out of high school...and guess what? They all make much more money than me! I'm considered the "loser" in the family and its getting to me. My parents don't understand how a college-grad could have such a hard time in life. I'm sorry to be self-indulgent here, but who shares a similiar plight? How do I get family off my back?
I don't mean to sound like snob with a college degree and expect a lavish lifestyle. I just can't understand why I can't afford to live in the real world. My siblings are smart and their hard work experience got them to where they are...I actually regret going to college and wish they did what they did...working up in the world.
I realize I may sound materialist and equate money=success, but that is not the case. The problem is that I can barely live. I have huge dental work that needs to be done and have no insurance to do so. My student loans are killing me. I live in a 1 bedroom practically on skid row.
