Open Question: Is 9.5% ridiculously high for a student loan consolidation...should I take it?

I graduated high school in 2005 and am going back to college full-time in the fall. I just finished my 08-09 FAFSA with an EFC of $51,989. I made $28k gross last year, but I am quitting my job to go to school this fall. My parents are not going to pay one penny of the EFC that the federal government deems they should pay. I have been working full-time to pay for everything myself for the past two years while taking classes at night and paying for my education. I have been paying my parents rent to live in the basement, but somehow the federal government will still not recognize me as an independent student. I don't make $51,989 a year and my parents aren't going to help AT ALL (because we have a bad relationship and they believe that if I paid for everything for myself over the past two years, they don't need to help now). I can't make them pay or help me.

Do I have any options other than waiting until I turn 24 to claim independence or to take out thousands of dollars in loans?
Sure, there's a lot more to the story, you are only allowed so many words to ask a Q.

My mom is schizo-affective and I had to stay with her when I graduated from HS because my dad was living 3 states away and she needs care for daily life. My dad has since retired from USAF and moved "home".

I was first in my HS class until 2nd semester junior year and graduated with a very good record. I have a 4.0 GPA in college so far.

I guess my real question is this: why does the government make it so difficult for people who have other circumstances that the government chooses to ignore? And moreover, why does my future and the quality of my education depend on whether or not I am able to come up with $80,000 (at the very least) to pay for an undergraduate bachelor's? Isn't that why the government "tries" to help in the first place?

Open Question: Student Loans for a poor gal :D?

Okay, I need help in getting some student loans so i can get back in school. However I have been told that I do not qualify for a federal student loan because my parents make way too much money. Problem is I'm the one paying for my education and I have no way to afford it myself, though my parents did agree to co-sign a loan for me. So please help me :)? Chunlee needs to get her butt back in school.

Open Question: Is 9.5% ridiculously high for a student loan consolidation...should I take it?

I am paying one consolidated federal loan, and I have 4 alternative loans about to begin. The only interest rate I can get (without a cosigner) is 9.5%...Should I just do 5 payments a month? That's a lot of $$$ for a recent grad!

What would you do? If I take the 9.5%, over 20 years I will be paying about 35,000 in interest. That just seems ridiculous to me...

Open Question: does anyone know how to have federal student loans discharged or forgiven?

A recent business show on TV stated: if a student accepts employment with the Federal government upon graduation, his student loan can be waived. Is this correct?
<a target="_blank" href="

I am 17 an am leaving for college because i am 17 i can not sign a lease but i want to get an apartment near the college i plan on going to ( Fremont , Ca) Also i am 17 and need to take out student loans but have no cosigner ??? I know about Federal Stafford loans already my EFC is 0 Can anyone give me sum info?

Open Question: does anyone know how to have federal student loans discharged or forgiven?

I am in a true nightmare. I feel the only way out of this is to die out..not that i WANT to do that, for sure. However, I owe a whopping $190,000 in federal student loans. I am a social worker and clear only about $3000 a month. I have had these things deferred and done forbarences until I just can't any longer. I know I can't bankrupt out. Where the heck do I turn? I have talked to these folks until I am blue in the face. I don't own a home ( am renting), I don't have anything of any value. As a social worker with a home health/hospice agency, I don't make much. I am divorced and feel like I am in an awful bind. It's devastating!!! I would greatly appreciate any helpful advice.
a lot happened between the time I graduated and the time I borrowed the money. I was married during that time, for one thing. I divorced shortly after and have stayed single. I never got a penny of child support for our children. My elderly mother also developed a catastrophic illness and i have been trying (alone) to take care of her, well. I can't join the military because I am well over 40. I went to college at an older age to try and support my children so I wouldn't have to ask for government handouts since their dad flew the coup.

Open Question: What does deposited mean on the IRS web-site?

I want to save up $25,000 and have all my credit cards paid off (what I'm doing now). I took out both federal and private loans but I am only wanting to apply for forebearance on my private loans. They are at a high interest rate however (12%). I shouldn't have done it but what's done is done.
I currently live in an apartment so the money I pay for rent could easily be my mortgage. My mortgage would equal the same amount. It would actually be lower since my lovey and I will be splitting. Anyways, the market in Baton Rouge is really booming right now.
Oops...I forgot to say....I don't start paying on them until August.

Open Question: Is that really how much my parents have to pay every year?

I got a financial aid package from my first choice school. With the scholarship and federal grants, there is still a gap of 25 grand (like 3/5 of my parent's current income which will go down soon because of some looming circumstances). Do my parents have to pay that 25 or take a loan out themselves? Can normally I take a low interest student loan out and pay after I graduate? I guess I need some clarification on what that number means.

Open Question: Was your federal return taken?

I have a question- I found out this year that my husband owes money for student loans. They have already taken my state refund and said they would take the federal as well. When I went to the state website, it said that my return was intercepted. When I went to the federal website, it said that my refund had been deposited into my account and that it would take upto the 13th to see it. Are they saying in was deposited into my bank account or are they saying it was deposited into the account that the money was owed?

Resolved Question: Defaulted Student Loan & Income Tax Return?

I have a defaulted student loan. According to the IRS website, my income tax refund was mailed on Feb. 8. Today I looked at the refund site and saw this notice: Your refund may be reduced to pay a past due obligation such as child support, another federal agency debt, or state income tax. I called the FMS number to see if there were any debts listed against me, and none were. So, what are the odds that I'm going to get my refund?
That is, I don't understand why I suddenly got this notice after my refund was mailed and if none are listed against me on FMS, why did I get the notice at all?
Yes, I'm trying to work out something with the debtors, just haven't reached a solution yet. Thank you all so much!

Open Question: Tax Question - Can a 1040EZ filer claim a 1098T?

My daughter wants to file her own taxes. She is a full time college student and made about $4K last year with $270 withheld for federal. She has a 1098T from college. Can she incorporate this into her 1040EZ or should she file with another form?

She has her own student loans (co-signed by my ex wife), etc.. lives in the dorm and stays with me on the week-ends.

Would she make out better if I claimed her? ...if I could legally claim her ???

How does that work?

Help!

Reform intelligence oversight? Break the link between lobbyists and legislation? Enact all the recommendations made by the commission that investigated the terrorist attacks of Sept. 11, 2001? "Pay as you go," not increasing the deficit, whether the issue is middle class tax relief, health care or some other priority? Cut the interest rate on student loans in half? Broaden the types of stem cell research allowed with federal funds? Anything?

Resolved Question: 2008 Tax Rebate Checks- Can they be taken?

Hi! I am hoping that you can answer a question for me, or at least direct me to where I can find the answer. I found out this year that my husband defaulted on a student loan before we were married. I found this out because BOTH my federal and state (CA) tax returns were intercepted by the CA ED Fund even though my husband didn't work in 2007. My question is this- are the checks that are going to be given out subject to be intercepted like a regular tax return? I just want to know if I can plan on getting that check or is that going to be taken as well?

I have looked all over the website and can not find out how to contact them.

Voting Question: Will My Fiance get his IRS Rebate check if all other Federal returns are intercepted?

I found out, about a week ago that my student loans had been placed into default ($18,000) - The company holding the loans is DCS out of California.

To my dismay I found out (according to the woman caller) that they were going to seize my Federal Tax Return, and that if i didnt enter into a Voluntary Payment Program, that they would start docking my pay 15%

To date I have entered into a payment plan that is comfortable for me by giving a sizeable downpayment.

Here is my ultimate question:

This morning I checked my bank account, and to my surprise my federal tax return had been depositied.

Once it is deposited can this DCS company still take it away from me?

Did they not act quickly enough?

Can I be happy about this money, or can they still come take it away from me?

Or - Was this all just threats on her part to get me to volunteer to pay? I understand that LEGALLy they can seize your returns and garnish your wages, but they didn't.

Any help would be amazing. Thank you!!!!!
Thank you for your response. I appreciate the information!

The "sizeible down payment" was unfortunately money that I had to borrow from my employer. He's a great man, and he took care of me in a time of need.

I actually have two young children that I support (along with my fiancee) all by myself: Hence why this money is so very important to me. It's clothing for them, It's food on the table.

I really struggle financially, which is why I wanted to ask before getting too excited about this money.

So, bottom line, they aren't going to take my return away from me?

I wasn't paying it because I am the sole bread-winner for my family.

I work two jobs to support my fiancee (who is disabled) and my two young children.

Money eventually runs out, and if given the choice to make a student loan payment, or to buy diapers for my son - The choice is obvious.

I am doing the best that I can.

Resolved Question: Why is the American public not researching Ron Paul as a viable candidate?

I've seen many users here ask who Ron Paul is when a question is asked concerning him. Shouldn't we educate ourselves about all the primary candidates before voting? Read the follwing and tell me what you think:

Mr. Paul supported his children during their undergraduate and medical school years, preventing their participation in federal student loans because the program was taxpayer-subsidized. He has rejected a Congressional pension for the same reason.

And here's some quotes:

...federal hate crime laws criminalize thoughts, they are incompatible with a free society.

Mr. Speaker, I once again find myself compelled to vote against the annual budget resolution for a very simple reason: it makes government bigger. […] We need to understand that the more government spends, the more freedom is lost
* Racism is simply an ugly form of collectivism, the mindset that views humans strictly as members of groups rather than individuals. Racists believe that all individuals who share superficial physical characteristics are alike: as collectivists, racists think only in terms of groups. By encouraging Americans to adopt a group mentality, the advocates of so-called “diversity” actually perpetuate racism. Their obsession with racial group identity is inherently racist. The true antidote to racism is liberty. Liberty means having a limited, constitutional government devoted to the protection of individual rights rather than group claims. Liberty means free-market capitalism, which rewards individual achievement and competence, not skin color, gender, or ethnicity.
o Government and Racism, April 16, 2007
Oddball, what Im saying is, that maybe the tide would turn if people would actually educate themselves about the candidates--all of them--instead of going with the status quo. If there are voters out there who don't even know who all the candidates are, then they may be missing something!
Stewie, because Mr. Paul practices what he preaches and wants to protect our liberties, you deem him looney? What exactly do you support?
Adam, I said nothing about conspiracy theories! You're the one who isn't 'listening.'

I asked for answers and opinions, not to be called names. When an adult resorts to name calling it's a sign of feeling inadequate. And it's rude.

I am a student, single, and I rent where I live near the university. my loans are pushed off for me to not pay anything until the end of my accademic career. Am I eligible for the stimulus refund? I started to file my taxes online (turbotax) and finished the federal portion, and the question never came up, so I wasn't sure what it took, if anything. Thanks in advance

Voting Question: Tax exempt question in response to all my answers?

Ok to quickly recap im a 22 year old college student who claimed exempt and made 13k this year. You all told me this is too much to claim exempt and I will end up having to owe money. Heres my question to these answers, the following year I made 7500 and didn't claim exempt from fed and state tax. I got back all my fed and all my state they took so clearly if your making 7500 you get every thing back so I assume 13k is not much more then that. Does anyone know the cap where you start to owe becuase I know its higher then 7500. I always thought if you used the EZ form which means you make less then 30,000 you would get back all your federal and state but from what I am hearing this is not the case. Also I do pay my own tuition I get a staf loan from government but that only pays for like 1/4. So whats the cap where you don't get all your federal and state back when you file...In my sit my parents don't care if they claim me or if i go indepedent what should I do?

Resolved Question: What is the better choice, File taxes as a dependent or independent?

I went to school from December 2007 to June 2007. I then moved from the dorms to an apartment in June and started a full time job.

In MA we can write off rent on our taxes (up to $3000 according to turbotax).

If I get claimed as a dependent, can I write off rent for the last 6 months of the year and can I write off the interest on my student loans (state or federal)?

I am 22 years old.

Voting Question: does nydept of ed take federal and state income tax refunds for outstandng student loans?

	Single
No dependants
401 K withdrawl 1200.00
Renter
student loan interest deduction of 2500.00
no extra deductions

I need some clarification before i submit my 2007 return. My 2006 year i got back a little over 900.00, i made about 36000.00. Now in 2007 I left my job in april and got another, I made about 39000.00 this year between those two jobs. I also cashed my 401k, federal was already deducted and I know about the 10 penalty. Now I don't think a $3000 increase in pay is that significant to knock me into another tax bracket, from what i've read I'm still in the same tax bracket... so can someone please explain why my tax return dropped from $900 to $400..even with the 10% penalty I still think that's a little low

Voting Question: Student Loan offset, will it happen?

I have the student loan on default, but ive been paying the collection agency for the past two years, even today i got a letter from the university services with the info of the taxes i paid to put them on my tax return. I work with the federal government and they dont garnish or offset my paycheck but when i call the FMS numbers it says "May Be" offset and no more information, i have all the reciepts of my payments (made by US Postal Money Order) in hand and i have never recieved a letter telling me that they will going to offset something (salary or return), whatsd your opinion about this?

Thanks
Ok so, i got an agreement with the collection agency to pay the debt and finish with this. i already filled my returns and the IRS accepted them and it says i should be getting the refund on Feb 19... the US Treasury will know ASAP that i payed the student loan in full or they will be taking my tax refund because they dont know yet?

Resolved Question: Is it possible to file Chapter 7 or 11 Bankruptcy on Federal Student loans?

I am going to file online for my taxes when i get off of work today. I am a full time student as well as i work full time. I have loans out there, last year i guess some how i was able to collect a majority of money on what they call a "hope credit" which was mostly involved with interest rates on school loans. However; i called citi-bank and they said that i wouldnt be able to do that this year because i did it last year and because i never paid any of the interest back. So i accepted that, but they said they need me to send in some form. What form could they be talking about?
Next issue: I just got back my tax info on1098-T 19,125.00 saise under amounts billed for qulified tuition and related expences. Someone told me that because i have that much in school loans over the year that i will get both federal and state taxes back is this true and is there a cap on how much i can get back? Last time i could only get up to a certain amount.

Resolved Question: Is a private student loan with variable interest rate a bad choice?

Just trying to get some opinions and facts. I know that a fixed rate is much more desired, but it seems that all the banks only offer variable rates on their private loans.I would be getting a $1,500 loan. Do you think this is a bad move on my part? I have a $2,000 loan out through sallie mae as well as federal.
I've checked both Chase and Bank of America and they also have variable interest rate that is decided per month.

Voting Question: Should I be getting more back?

My husband and I made 87,000 this year. We both claim 1 on our W4. We deducted our mortgage interest, work related expenses, property taxes, student loan interest. Is there anything I'm missing? We're only getting $160 back from federal and we owe the state $7. Does that seem right?

Resolved Question: Can my federal refund be offset by anything other than student loans or back taxes.?

I e- filed and checked the website for the state today and my refund was taken for a third party debt? I don't have any student loans or back taxes. So the IRS website gives me a date of deposit for my Federal return. Can a third party take that money?
I also don't owe any back child support.

Resolved Question: Is it possible to file Chapter 7 or 11 Bankruptcy on Federal Student loans?

<a target="_blank" href="
